My review: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Brief Cases is a collection of short stories from the Dresden Files, set in between books.

I found this book to be more consistently better than the other collection!  I felt it added depth to the main books, and you get to see things from other people’s point of view, including Molly!

Brief Cases was published on 10th June 2010, and is available from Amazon, Waterstones and Bookshop.org.

My review:🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Harry is still Queen Mab’s Winter Knight, and so her champion.  And also hers to do what she wants with!  Which is how he ends up working for Nicodemus Archleone, as Mab is paying off a debt.  He’s to help Nicodemus break into a vault in town, which will help them break into a vault in the Nevernever!  Harry is not impressed, and aware of treachery must be just around the corner!

This was another thrilling story, and one where a lot of Harry’s friends feature.  I have really enjoyed the evolution of each character throughout these books, be it friends, allies, or foes!  It’s been really consistently good, and I haven’t been faced with any glaring plot holes or other issues you get with long running series!

My review:🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Cold Days by Jim Butcher (Dresden Files 14) has Harry alive and being nursed back to health, with Mab trying to kill him often.  It’s all in aid of getting her Winter Knight ready to face whatever comes his way.  And when he’s better, it’s off to work he goes, at the behest of Mab, who asks him to kill Maeve, her daughter.

Harry returns to Chicago, and learns that Demonreach, his island, is in danger.  He also needs to do some explaining as to what’s happened, and of course, work out if Mab is serious.

I have been really enjoying reading this series, and when I finish one book, I want to start the next!  The world is well written and interesting, with characters who return, so none of them feel throw away.  I highly recommend this series if you want to dip your toe into urban fantasy!

Cold Days was published on 27th November 2012, and is available from Amazon, Waterstones and Bookshop.org.

Ghost Story (book 13)

My review:🌟🌟🌟🌟

Ghost Story by Jim Butcher (Dresden Files 13) follows on from the dramatic ending of Changes, the previous book.  Harry learned he had a child, who had been kidnapped by the Red Court vampires, and so he went to war.  He sacrificed everything he could, including killing Susan, his ex-lover, mother of his child, and half vampire.  He agreed to become the Winter Knight.  He did everything he could, and he brought his daughter home.  And then he was shot, and presumed killed.

So, Harry being a ghost isn’t a huge surprise, but now he has to see the aftermath of all of his decisions, and he’s told that three of his friends are in grave danger if he doesn’t investigate his murder.

This was a really enjoyable continuation of the story.  It had me hooked from the beginning, and I was fascinated with what would happen!  I’m looking forward to the next book in the series!

My review:?????

Side Jobs by Jim Butcher is full of short stories from the Dresden storyline, giving you more background for some of the main storylines, or introducing completely new characters, like Bigfoot!

I really enjoyed these, and found that for the most part, they were really enjoyable.  Jim Butcher gives a brief explanation for each story as to why he was writing it, and in some cases, the headspace he was in.  There was only one story that I didn’t feel bring anything.

Side Jobs was published on 26th October 2010, and is available on Amazon, Waterstones and Bookshop.org.

My review:????

Dresden is back again, and this time, Morgan, the warden who dogged Dresden for years, now comes to him for help.  He’s been set up to look like the killer of someone in the White Council headquarters in Edinburgh, and Dresden is the only person he can think of to go to that wouldn’t be suspected of harbouring Morgan.

Dresden has to investigate who could get into the headquarters without being seen, or was it an inside job?  Harry’s apprentice, Molly is around, and Morgan doesn’t trust her at all, which leads to some situations.

Seeing Dresden helping someone he would never think he would help is interesting, and learning a little more about the White Council is good.  The Dresden File books never disappoint, and you’ll enjoy the story being unveiled for you.

Small Favor (book 10)

My review:

Small Favor has Harry Dresden doing Queen Mab a ‘small favor’, which has issues.  We meet Billy Goats Gruff, the Knights of the Cross are around, and that means that Nicodemus and the Denarians are around.

I enjoy the pace of these books.  You know that Harry is going to be running around like a mad thing, with his friends backing him up, and that he’ll save the day, but probably risking everything.

If you like urban fantasy, then I really recommend these books!  There is a growing cast of characters, that bring different things to the plot.

My review:?????

White Night by Jim Butcher (Dresden Files 9) has some women going missing, and others being found murdered.  Dresden is called in by Murphy, now a sergeant, who wants to pay him from her own pocket to look into all of this, as the women have been practitioners.

It’s been a year since Harry took Molly as his apprentice, and so we’re seeing how that is going.

This is another story that adds to the background and world of the books.  We’re told more about other practitioners of magic, how people learn magic, and more insight into Harry.

Proven Guilty (book 8)

My review:?????

Proven Guilty by Jim Butcher (Dresden Files 8) has Harry at a horror film festival which Molly (Michael’s eldest daughter) is working at, and something hinkey is going on there.  Harry has also been warned that there’s black magic being practiced in Chicago.  And there’s something odd going on with the faeries.  We wouldn’t want Harry to get bored now, would we?

Harry’s world is one that has been built very well, and you’ve been introduced to extra characters gradually, so Michael (for instance) can come back, is a consistent character, we know what to expect of him, and is a distinct character.  There’s no confusing people in the Dresden Files, which is a great thing.

There is good development with Harry’s character and world, and makes me excited about the next book (and the next, and the next!).

My review:????

Dead Beat by Jim Butcher (Dresden Files book 7) has 6 Necromancer’s in town, all looking for the Word of Kemmler.Β  Mavra, the black vampire, also wants it, and is threatening Murphy’s career, and she wants Harry to find the Word, and give it to her.

There’s zombies of different kinds, a glimpse of Bob from the past, and a bit of body swapping.Β  It all makes for an average day for Harry!

I’ve been enjoying reading all of the Dresden Files.Β  The world is being filled more and more with every book.
