Recent Reads: James Patterson: The Stories of My Life by James Patterson is exactly what it says it is. Stories from James Patterson’s life, but not an autobiography.  It also gives an insight into James Patterson’s writing process.

It’s a very readable book, written in a very conversational way.  You get stories sprinkled throughout his life, from when he was young, when he was in marketing (I feel this explains some of his huge success), and with lots of stories about his famous friends and collaborators, like Bill Clinton!

It’s very interesting and you go along at a fair clip when reading it!

100 Plants to Feed the Birds by Laura Erickson has a lot of photos of plants and birds, aimed at North America, but shows the pure breadth of different plants that encourage birds into gardens.

I thought the book was really nice, and I was interested to see just how many different birds liked such different plants!

100 Plants to Feed the Birds was published on 20th December 2022, and is available from Amazon, Waterstones and Bookshop.org.

The Art of the Travel Journal by Abbey Sy is a guide on how to write a travel journal, as you’d guess.  It has photos and descriptions of different versions, such as photo, drawings, writing, and a combination.

It has step by step guide for things like collaging, suggestions on how to decide what type of travel journal you might want to do, tips and suggestions for how to do things like making your own watercolour tin.

I thought this was a very inspiring book, with lots of photos and suggestions of people who use travel journals you can follow, and get ideas from!

Shadowlands; A Journey Through Lost Britain by Matthew Green looks at places in the UK that are deserted or abandoned, and puts them in the context of their history.

This is an interesting book with the author visiting each site, so you get to know what they look like today.

I found this to be a good book, and liked the mix of setting it in it’s historical place, and what it’s like today.

Shadowlands; A Journey Through Lost Britain was published on 17th March 2022, and is available from Amazon, Waterstones and Bookshop.org.

Poster Art of the Disney Parks by Daniel Handke, Vanessa Hunt is a fascinating book, with posters from when rides opened in Disneyland, and then more up to date posters from rides opening in other parks.  It shows the art influence across the years.

It shows the evolution on the posters, and the printing process in some cases.  I really liked this book, and found the insights fascinating!

Poster Art of the Disney Parks was published in September 2012, and is available from Amazon, Waterstones and Bookshop.org.

It looks like there’s a new edition coming out this year as well!

Twas The Nightshift Before Christmas by Adam Kay are the experiences that Adam Kay had a Christmas, as by the luck of the draw, he worked most of the Christmas’s he was an NHS doctor!

This is no less shocking, gory, amazing and funny than This is Going to Hurt was.  But, it is shorter.  I enjoyed Adam Kay’s writing again, and was engaged with what happened.  This book did, again, make me cry, and more trigger warnings as there is a graphic chapter, but he does give you a warning in the book.

Twas The Nightshift Before Christmas was published on 17th October 2019 and is available from Amazon, Waterstones and Bookshop.org.

Christmas; A short history from solstice to santa by Andy Thomas looks at history through the ages, along with beautiful pictures.  It starts in ancient times and goes up to modern Christmas.

This is a lovely book to read through at Christmas time, to have a read about how Christmas has been celebrated throughout history.

This is Going to Hurt: Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor by Adam Kay is about Adam Kay’s experiences as a junior doctor in the NHS. It’s fascinating, harsh, sad, jubilant and graphic, and made me cry.

Adam Kay shares his experiences from his notes he wrote at the time, which makes them vivid.  As he worked within a Gynaecological department, there are experiences of loss, and the reality of trying for a baby with IVF, so please let this be a trigger warning for you.

Well written, beautiful and shocking, this is a book to dive into and look at the NHS with new eyes.

This is Going to Hurt: Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor was published on 7th September 2017, and is available from Amazon, Waterstones and Bookshop.org

Love in the Blitz; A Woman in a World Turned Upside Down by Eileen Alexander is a compilation of letters that Eileen Alexander sent to the man that she loves. They start in 1939 and go throughout World War 2, whilst Gershon is drafted, and sent off to war.

They are entertaining letters, and show a time when Eileen is ready to be her own person.  She writes about how difficult she finds the separation from Gershon, how her parents control her actions, how she finds her work, about her friends, and the about living through the war.

I found this to be well written, sometimes hard to read, interesting, and really insightful.

Love in the Blitz was published on 30th April 2020, and is available from Amazon, Waterstones and Bookshop.org.

The Fall of the House of Byron; Scandal and Seduction in Georgian England by Emily Brand tells the stories of Lord Byron’s ancestors, who were just as scandalous as he was!  If you’re looking for a book about Lord Byron’s life, this isn’t it.  It is referenced, but assumes you know about it already.

If you’re looking for background on Lord Byron’s family, or stories from Georgian times of elopement, murder, debt and adventures at sea, then this is a great book for you!

The Fall of the House of Byron was published on 16th April 2020, and is available from Amazon, Waterstones and Bookshop.org.
