The City We Became by N. K. Jemisin is a fantasy book where five New Yorkers have to come together to protect their city as they become the city.

They have to protect it against another thing that wants to destroy New York as it has destroyed other cities.

You get a tour of New York, and characteristics of different districts within New York, all with our heroes being under threat.

I really enjoyed this story.  It’s fast paced, funny, sad and well written!  This is the first in a trilogy, so I’m looking forward to the next one!

The City We Became was published on 29th July 2021 and is available from Amazon, Waterstones and Bookshop.org.

The Invisible Library by Genevieve Cogman (Invisible Library 1) is a fantasy novel where books from different dimensions are gathered together by librarians in a library.  Irene is an experienced librarian, who has just been given an apprentice called Kai, and is being sent off to a different version of London, where there are vampires, werewolves, and a dangerous book to recover.

I really enjoyed the story line, and the characters.  The concept for different worlds was one that I really enjoyed as it wasn’t just the people, but also the time period and inventions that changes!

This is the first book in a series, and yes, I’m reading them all, so expect more reviews soon!

The Invisible Library was published on 15th January 2015 and is available on Amazon, Waterstones and Bookshop.org.

Side Jobs by Jim Butcher is full of short stories from the Dresden storyline, giving you more background for some of the main storylines, or introducing completely new characters, like Bigfoot!

I really enjoyed these, and found that for the most part, they were really enjoyable.  Jim Butcher gives a brief explanation for each story as to why he was writing it, and in some cases, the headspace he was in.  There was only one story that I didn’t feel bring anything.

Side Jobs was published on 26th October 2010, and is available on Amazon, Waterstones and Bookshop.org.

The Age of Witches by Louisa Morgan starts in 1692, when Bridget Bishop is killed for being a witch, and her two daughters inherit powers from her.  One daughter is about helping other people, and the other daughter is about helping herself.  Their children follow in these footsteps, and 200 years later, Annis is a descendant of the helping sister, and her step mother, Frances, is a descendant of the other sister.  And Frances has a plan to use Annis to establish her social standing in New York.

Harriet, Annis’s great aunt, and also descended from the good sister, sees what is happening, and helps Annis.

This is an enjoyable historic fantasy read, set in 1890s New York and England.  The character motivations ring true, and I was interested in what was going to happen next!

The Age of Witches was published on 23rd April 2020, and is available from Amazon, Waterstones and Bookshop.org.

A Court of Silver Flames by Sarah J. Maas is the first book from another perspective in this series!  It’s mostly from the point of view of Nesta, Feyre’s sister, who is prickly, angry, and Feyre is not sure how to help her any more.

This is an epic fantasy series, set in a world where human and fae are separated by a wall, for the good of humanity.  Sarah J Maas writes fantasy with a raunchy romance edge.

I’ve been enjoying reading this series, and the next book is due next year!

A Court of Silver Flames was published on 16th February 2021, and is available from Amazon, Waterstones and Bookshop.org.

Chosen Ones by Veronica Roth is set 10 years after the five chosen ones saved the world.  We get to see how the most famous people in the world adapt to life after having to fight for their lives, using uncertain magic, and watching others die along the way.

I really enjoyed the look into ‘what happens after’, and found the characters to be well written and believable.

This was a really good fantasy novel, and the start of a new series, so I’m looking forward to reading more!

Chosen Ones was published on 7th April 2020 and is available from Amazon, Waterstones (exclusive edition) and Bookshop.org.

Susan, Harry’s semi vampire former lover is back.  She’s shown up as the Red Court has kidnapped her and Harry’s child.  A child that Harry knew nothing about.  And now he needs to get it together to go and save her.

This is a book that changes everything for Harry, and I think the title is very apt. Jim Butcher keeps up the tension, revealing twists that surprised me.  There are characters that you’ve grown to love over time, and some absences, like Michael Carpenter, who has retired from being a Knight of the Sword, due to injury.

Changes by Jim Butcher was published on 6th April 2010, and is available from Amazon, Waterstones and Bookshop.org.

Werewolves of London by Angie Fox is the completion of the Monster M*A*S*H series.  We have Medusa giving birth to her baby and wanting only Petra.  The gods want to get back to their war, and there’s ex boyfriends wandering around.

This is a funny fantasy book, which is fast paced and well written!  Petra is running around trying to solve all the problems that seem to pop up just for her, and it’s enjoyable chaos!

Werewolves of London was published on 23rd February 2021, and is available from Amazon and Waterstones.

A Court of Frost and Starlight by Sarah J. Maas is a book inbetween books.  You often get novellas or short stories between books, but this book is over 200 pages, so compared to the other books, this is much shorter.  It feels like a Christmas story, and so was lovely and warming.

Winter Solstice is coming and so Feyre, Rhys and so on can have some time off, they just need to be able to shut off.  This is a lovely story, just focusing on people trying to heal, which is important after the events of the last book.

This is also the last book from Feyre’s point of view, which is interesting to me, so I’m looking forward to the next book in the series!

A Court of Frost and Starlight was published on 1st May 2018 and is available from Amazon, Waterstones and Bookshop.org.

Wilder Girls by Rory Power is set in a girls boarding school in the middle of nowhere, and it’s been 18 months since they were sent into quarantine.  Many of the girls and teachers have died from the Tox, and there is a small amount of both left alive.

This is a YA novel that is a mix of fantasy and sci-fi, with a bit of horror thrown in, with the government keeping the school under quarantine.  When one of the girls goes missing, Hetty goes hunting for her.

I enjoyed this book, and the story, and wanted to see how things were going to come out for them all.

Wilder Girls was published on 6th February 2020 and is available from Amazon, Waterstones and Bookshop.org.
