My review:

Small Favor has Harry Dresden doing Queen Mab a ‘small favor’, which has issues.  We meet Billy Goats Gruff, the Knights of the Cross are around, and that means that Nicodemus and the Denarians are around.

I enjoy the pace of these books.  You know that Harry is going to be running around like a mad thing, with his friends backing him up, and that he’ll save the day, but probably risking everything.

If you like urban fantasy, then I really recommend these books!  There is a growing cast of characters, that bring different things to the plot.

Small Favor was published on 1st April 2008 and is available from Amazon, Waterstones and Bookshop.org.

My review:?

Crescendo by Becca Fitzpatrick (Hush, Hush book 2) has Nora in love with Patch, her guardian angel after she sacrificed her life for him in the last book.  Patch is still being evasive about things, and he says this is because the other angels are watching him closely.  This also means that they really shouldn’t be together.  Also, Nora’s arch enemy at high school, Marcie, is in summer school with her.

I have found the characters in both books to be troubling.  Patch has invaded Nora’s mind on multiple occasions, and now he’s not telling her what’s happening.  As a YA book, this seems like it’s showcasing unhealthy relationships as goals, and just like the star of ‘You’, Penn Badgley being unhappy with people having a crush on his character, I’m not comfortable with this series, and so I’ve decided that this is where I’m going to leave this series.

Crescendo was published on 19th October 2010.

The Monster MASH by Angie Fox (Monster M*A*S*H 1) has Dr Petra Robichaud drafted into an eternal war between the old gods and the new gods, and is at a MASH camp (think of the US comedy series, M*A*S*H based in South Korea during the Korean war).  Petra can see the dead, and saves Galen, who believes that she is the person that the oracles predict.

This is a fun fantasy romp, and I’m looking forward to reading the other two books in this series!

The Monster MASH was published with this title on 29th December 2020.  It was previously published with a different title (Immortally Yours), and a different cover.  You can buy it through Amazon.

I’ve read a number of Angie Fox’s books, from the Southern Spirits series

Southern Spirits, A Ghostly Gift and The Skeleton in the Closet – book 1, 1.5 and 2

Pecan Pies and Dead Guys – book 7

The Mint Julep Murders – book 8

The Ghost of Christmas Past – book 8.5

Southern Bred and Dead – book 9

I was given this book in return for an unbiased review, so my thanks to NetGalley and to Moose Island Books and Author Collective 20  (the publishers) for this book.

The Mime Order by Samantha Shannon (The Bone Season book 2) has Paige back in London, having escaped Sheol I, but things are still wrong.  Scion is still in charge, and Paige wants to tell the Unnatural Assembly all about the Rephaim, and the truth behind Scion.

Jaxon wants to keep all of that quiet, and wants Paige back with him, but Paige doesn’t feel that’s her place any more.  She is being torn between what life used to be like before she knew the truth, and wanting everyone to know what is really going on.

This is an enjoyable continuation of the story started in The Bone Season.  I enjoyed seeing where the story was going, and look forward to the next book, to see what’s going to happen next!

The Mime Order was published on 27th January 2015, and is available to buy from Amazon, Waterstones and Bookshop.org.

A Court of Mist and Fury (A Court of Thorns and Roses #2) by Sarah J. Maas continues Feyre’s story.  She survived Amarantha’s court and gained powers of the High Fae lord’s who brought her back to life, but she isn’t over the emotional toil of what happened at that court.

Tamlin is delighted to have her home in the Spring Court, but she has to abide by the agreement she made with Rhysand, where she has to go off with him.  She feels disconnected from life, and divided as she tries to return to herself.

This is another great fantasy romance book, where you get swept along with the story, seeing how life changes for Feyre, and cheering her on.

A Court of Mist and Fury was published on 3rd May 2016, and is available from Amazon, Waterstones and Bookshop.org.

White Night by Jim Butcher (Dresden Files 9) has some women going missing, and others being found murdered.  Dresden is called in by Murphy, now a sergeant, who wants to pay him from her own pocket to look into all of this, as the women have been practitioners.

It’s been a year since Harry took Molly as his apprentice, and so we’re seeing how that is going.

This is another story that adds to the background and world of the books.  We’re told more about other practitioners of magic, how people learn magic, and more insight into Harry.

White Night was published on 3rd April 2007, and is available from Amazon, Waterstones and Bookshop.org.

Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick (Hush, Hush book 1) is a YA fantasy book, so you can go into this book knowing it’s going to be dramatic, there’s going to be fantastical elements, and at least one person isn’t going to be who you think they are.

Nora is a high school student, busy with her studies, when Patch starts at her school.  He’s got a lot of insight into her, and a good smile, but Nora doesn’t trust him.

There’s a couple of incidents that scare Nora, and she doesn’t know who can help her.

This is very much in the style of Twilight, so if you enjoyed that you’ll probably enjoy this.  I haven’t read Twilight for years, so I don’t remember how Edward was, but I *spoiler* was not a fan of the mind manipulation, and how quickly Nora was ok with it.

Hush, Hush was published on 13th October 2009, and is available from Amazon, Waterstones and Bookshop.org.

Where Have All the Elves Gone? by Christian Warren Freed has Daniel Thomas, a high fantasy author, who finds out that some of the things he was writing about weren’t actually as fantastical as he had thought they were.

This is a murder mystery where Daniel is asked to help out the elves.  I didn’t find the book to be very engaging, and didn’t enjoy it.

Where Have All the Elves Gone? was published on 2 May 2018, and is available from Amazon, Waterstones and Bookshop.org.

The Pale Dreamer by Samantha Shannon (The Bone Season 0.5) is set before The Bone Season, but as I didn’t know about this novella until after I had read the first book, and it’s better that way round, I thought I’d review it in this order!

So yes, The Pale Dreamer is set 3 years before The Bone Season, when Paige has just joined the Seven Seals, and is getting to know Jaxom and the others.  She doesn’t have a lot of experience in using her powers, and doesn’t know her place in the gang or the underworld yet, but there’s a poltergeist on the loose, and she and Nick go after it.

This is a fun story with extra flavour about Paige settling in to her new role, and getting the name Pale Dreamer!

The Pale Dreamer was published on 6th August 2016, and is available from Amazon.

Thief’s Magic by Trudi Canavan is from two different points of view.  Tyen is a student wizard who is also studying as a historian.  He finds a magic book that will learn everything about a person if they touch it.

Rielle is a woman in a society where only priests are allowed to learn magic.  Rielle can see when magic has been used, and so has the ability to learn magic.

They both have to learn some truths that will change their worlds for them, and can affect others.

I thought this was a good story with lots of set up for the following books.

Thief’s Magic by Trudi Canavan was published on 7th May 2015, and is available on Amazon, Waterstones and Bookshop.org.
