Southern Bred and Dead has Frankie wanting to find his brother Lou, who is also dead.  Frankie found out in the last book that Lou is the one that shot and killed him, so Frankie has some questions!

Verity wants to help him, but also wants to investigate the death of her grandmother’s friend, who had some items for Verity, but after she fell (or was she pushed?) from the church tower, Verity can’t find them.

The ghosts around the church are also acting oddly.

Verity has her hands full trying to investigate everything, but we know that’s usual for her!

This was a fun read, with twists that I didn’t see coming!

Angie Fox also has another series of books called Accidental Demon Slayer, which has 11 books in the series! She also has a Facebook page and a reader group.

I’ve previously read and reviewed the below books in the series:

The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon (The Bone Season 1) is set in a world of Scion London, and there are those with psychic powers (voyants), and those who don’t.  It’s 2059, and Paige is a voyant with a rare power – she’s a Dream Walker.  She works in the criminal underworld for a man named Jaxom.

She gets caught one day, and taken to the city of Oxford, except this city isn’t meant to have existed for the last two hundred years!  But everyone knows that the Scion kill voyants when they find them, so what can be happening?

I enjoyed the story, the setting, and the twists! I didn’t know anything about this book going in, and so I want to leave as many surprises for you as possible!

This is a fantasy book, with different psychic powers and other twists.  I’m going to be reading more in the series, so you can watch out for those reviews!

The Bone Season was published on 20th August 2013, and is available from Amazon, Waterstones and Bookshop.org.

Call Me Joe by Martin Van Es and Andrew Crofts is set in the future a little, where environmentally things are worse, which has resulted in things like butterflies nearly dying out.  One day, the sun goes out, and then a man appears, who claims to be Jesus returned.  He has ideas about how humanity needs to change their ways, and a lot of people listening to him.

There’s political skewering, where you can spot various famous politicians (*cough* Trump, Putin and Jacinda Ahern *cough*), and a lot of what Joe says is about how humanity can and should improve.

I was reading this book, and had to pause to check if I had stumbled into Christianity section as this is quite a religious story, obviously, considering we have Jesus returned.

I wasn’t a huge fan.  I found it to be preaching to me, which in places is a good point, but I didn’t find the story to have many twists to it, which I feel it needed.

Call Me Joe was published on 1st March, and is available on Amazon, Waterstones and Bookshop.org.

I’m afraid I couldn’t find anywhere for you to follow Martin Van Es.

Proven Guilty by Jim Butcher (Dresden Files 8) has Harry at a horror film festival which Molly (Michael’s eldest daughter) is working at, and something hinkey is going on there.  Harry has also been warned that there’s black magic being practiced in Chicago.  And there’s something odd going on with the faeries.  We wouldn’t want Harry to get bored now, would we?

Harry’s world is one that has been built very well, and you’ve been introduced to extra characters gradually, so Michael (for instance) can come back, is a consistent character, we know what to expect of him, and is a distinct character.  There’s no confusing people in the Dresden Files, which is a great thing.

There is good development with Harry’s character and world, and makes me excited about the next book (and the next, and the next!).

Proven Guilty was published on 6th February 2007, and is available on Amazon, Waterstones and Bookshop.org.

Across the Face of the World by Russell Kirkpatrick is a fantasy novel, where the we follow characters on a journey.

Leith and Hal are travelling to save their parents, and are joined by 2 village elders and another villager.  They meet various people with different customs on their travels, and go through different landscapes.

I’m afraid I found this book too descriptive and quite dull.  Everything has to be described to the fullest, and any decisions need to be talked and argued about.  It was exhausting and exhaustive.

Across the Face of the World by Russell Kirkpatrick was published on 4th May 2006, and is available from Amazon, Waterstones and Bookshop.org.

The House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J Maas is set on a world where there are fae, shifters of all kinds, angels, demons, and also humans. Bryce is half human, half fae, loves to party, and is aware that she’s in a world that doesn’t treat every race the same.

Bryce is a very conflicted character, who feels like she shouldn’t be alive after a horrible event, but now she is out to find out what happened, and get revenge.

I read the first five chapters of this book before, but have now read all of it, and really enjoyed the story.

Sarah J Maas is good at sweeping you along with the story, and leaving you wanting more!  She does romance and danger well, and I enjoyed the twists and turns of this book that’s part romance, part crime and a lot of fantasy!

House of Earth and Blood (Crescent City #1) by Sarah J Maas was published on 3rd March 2020, and is available to buy from Amazon, Waterstones (an exclusive edition!) and Bookshop.com.

I’ve also read and reviewed A Court of Thorns and Roses which is book 1 in another series!

Southern Spirits: 5th Anniversary Deluxe Box Set by Angie Fox (Southern Spirits 1, 1.5 and 2)

Southern Spirits is the first book in the series, and introduces us to Verity Long, who is in the process of selling everything she has so she can pay back her former future mother-in-law after stood him up at the alter.  She is desperate to try to keep a hold of the family home, and so is willing to do anything to get some money.  When she manages to trap a ghost on her property, who is also eager for her to keep it, he lets her see the ghostly side of things, which can help when people have problems!

A Ghostly Gift is book 1.5, so a novella between books 1 and 2.  Verity is asked by her sister to help a friend out who has a resale shop (like a pawn shop), and so Verity and Frankie, her dead gangster friend, are going to investigate, and maybe get some furniture for the house out of it!

The Skeleton in the Closet has Verity and Frankie investigating a dead body, found in the library, which is a very old building, so there are lots of ghosts as potential witnesses!  There are secrets that someone is willing to kill to keep, and so Verity is going to have to watch her back!

These are an enjoyable cosy fantasy crime series, and as you can tell, I’m always happy to pick up one in the series!

Of Wicked Blood by Olivia Wildenstein & Katie Hayoz is a book that I thought I knew what was going to happen, and then added a fantasy twist!

Slate is used to looking out for himself, and has had to do this since he was very young in the foster system. Out of the blue, he’s told about a small town where his parents had lived, and that they’ve left money for him.

There are challenges, secrets and lies that come out when Slate goes there.  This was an enjoyable book, and one that surprised me.  I enjoyed the twists and the story.

Dead Beat by Jim Butcher (Dresden Files book 7) has 6 Necromancer’s in town, all looking for the Word of Kemmler.  Mavra, the black vampire, also wants it, and is threatening Murphy’s career, and she wants Harry to find the Word, and give it to her.

There’s zombies of different kinds, a glimpse of Bob from the past, and a bit of body swapping.  It all makes for an average day for Harry!

I’ve been enjoying reading all of the Dresden Files.  The world is being filled more and more with every book.

Dead Beat by Jim Butcher was published on 3 May 2005 and is available to buy from Amazon, Waterstones and Bookshop.org.

My review:?????

Blood Rites by Jim Butcher has Harry on the set of an adult film, undercover, trying to track down who is trying to kill the producer.  He only got involved in this because Thomas asked him to, and of course there’s going to be some money involved as well!

There’s also the matter of the Black Court vampires that are lurking around!

Blood Rites by Jim Butcher was published on 3rd August 2004, and is available from Amazon, Waterstones and Bookshop.org.
