The Song of the Quarkbeast by Jasper Fforde (The Last Dragonslayer 2) has Jennifer and the wizards of Kazam returning!  With Big Magic being unleashed in the last book, there’s more magic around, and King Snodd IV wants to be the one in control of it!

I thought the Quarkbeast was a great creature, and enjoyed the story in this book!  If you like your fantasy to be funny, then these are the books for you!

This is another thriller from James Patterson and Maxine Paetro, and is very enjoyable.

Dragon Consultant by Mell Eight is a fantasy novel, where Dane is a supernatural consultant, who is called in by the FAA for dragons in the airspace!  He turns up and finds dragon kits (young dragons) around a sick adult dragon, called Mercury.

Dane takes Mercury and the kits home after he hears the story of why they’re together, and promises to look into it.

This is a quick read, but enjoyable, with fun characters, government coverups, and a love story.

Dragon Consultant was published on 20th April 2020 and is available from Amazon and Bookshop.org (books 1-3 of the series).

The Last Dragonslayer by Jasper Fforde (The Last Dragonslayer 1) is set in a world where magic and dragons are real, but magic is fading away.  Jennifer Strange is a foundling, in charge of Kazam, an employment agency for wizards.

But something big is coming, and there are visions happening about the death of the last dragon.

This is a funny books, with an ensemble cast, who are a mix of wizards and others.  I really enjoyed the story, which has twists and surprises.

The Masked City by Genevieve Cogman (The Invisible Library 2) has Irene and Kai back again, along with Vale, the great detective of the world they have made their home.  We discovered that Kai is actually a dragon prince in the last book, and dragons love order.  They influence the worlds they are on to be order.  There is also the fae, who love chaos, and so they influence the worlds they are on in this way.  The two sides do not get on.

When Kai is kidnapped, this could cause a war!  Irene has to rescue Kai, and survive the chaos of the world that he’s been taken to.  She’s going to need all of her spy skills!

This is a series of books that I have loved reading, with each one adding more to the worlds!  We get to see more about the fae and the dragons in this book, and it’s felt very rich in characters and settings!

The Masked City was published on 3rd December 2015 and is available from Amazon, Waterstones and Bookshop.org.

The Missing Sister by Lucinda Riley (The Seven Sisters 7) has the six sisters finally be given information about their missing seventh sister, and so they start looking for her.  They are given by their family lawyer a clue, an image of a star shaped emerald ring, and this is a search that involves all of the sisters, and goes on all over the world!

The other half of this story is set in Ireland in 1920s, 1950s and 1970s, and tells a tale of sacrifice and love.  It was another sweeping drama, with more reveals that just made me want to read the next book as I’m looking forward to a lot of answers to all the questions I’ve built up over this series!

Lucinda Riley sadly died earlier this year, but the last book in this series is coming out next year.

The Missing Sister was published on 27th May 2021 and is available from Amazon, Waterstones and Bookshop.org.

The City We Became by N. K. Jemisin is a fantasy book where five New Yorkers have to come together to protect their city as they become the city.

They have to protect it against another thing that wants to destroy New York as it has destroyed other cities.

You get a tour of New York, and characteristics of different districts within New York, all with our heroes being under threat.

I really enjoyed this story.  It’s fast paced, funny, sad and well written!  This is the first in a trilogy, so I’m looking forward to the next one!

The City We Became was published on 29th July 2021 and is available from Amazon, Waterstones and Bookshop.org.

When He Was Wicked by Julia Quinn is the story of Francesca.  She marries John, an Earl, who is best friends with his cousin, Michael Stirling, a notorious rake, who is also in love with Francesca.  When John dies, and Francesca goes into mourning, Michael flees to India, but time passes, and he returns.  But can he have Francesca?

This book is appropriately titled, and has a lot of sexual tension, and sex scenes. It’s also an enjoyable will they, won’t they.  I’ve really enjoyed the series of books, and look forward to watching this unfold on the TV show!

When He Was Wicked was published on 29th June 2004, and is available from Amazon, Waterstones and Bookshop.org.

12th of Never by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro (Women’s Murder Club 12) has Lindsay’s baby, Julie, being born!  But of course there’s murder and mayhem happening as well!  We have a new summer intern with the police, Mackie Morales, and a serial killer, and a professor who claims to see crimes happening in the future.  And then he gets proved right!

This is a fast paced read, with lots of activity and shocks.  I enjoy this series as I know roughly what I’m going to get (personal life shocks for our main characters, crimes, some twists, and a surprise), but I’m not going to see it coming!

12th of Never was published on 29th April 2013 and is available from Amazon, Waterstones and Bookshop.org.

Midsummer Mysteries by Agatha Christie is a book of short stories by the Queen of Crime, all around the theme of summer.  Some are set on holiday on the French Riviera, and some are set in England.

There are short stories that include Miss Marple, Poirot, Tommy and Tuppence, and other detectives. It’s a fun book of stories that will take you on adventures, where the solution always has me guessing!

Midsummer Mysteries: Secrets and Suspense from the Queen of Crime was published on 22nd July 2021 and is available from Amazon, Waterstones and Bookshop.org.

Agatha Christie has written many books, and they are all from the Golden Age of crime, so if you aren’t familiar with her work, I highly recommend trying her out!
